Online shopping vs. window shopping: which one wins?

Ecommerce has revolutionised the way we shop, but it still can't completely replace the experience of browsing through physical stores. As an April 2023 McKinsey report puts it: consumers want to buy everything, everywhere, all at once.

"81% of all consumers now choose to research and browse across multiple channels before making their purchase - whether it be on a web browser, in a brick-and-mortar store, or through an app - for a single transaction. And it’s not just younger consumers. 80% of Gen X and 77% of baby boomers are doing it too. Omnichannel retail is flourishing across all consumer categories, but it is especially popular for discretionary spend, such as toys or home decor, where 70% of consumers have an integrated shopping experience."

Don’t let a recession dampen your spirit.

It might feel like the worst time to invest in growth, but some of the most popular brands seized the opportunity and made their start amidst challenging market conditions. To name a few...

1. Electronic Arts: founded in the early 80s during an economic downturn, EA is now a major player in the gaming industry
2. Microsoft: born during the 1973-75 recession, a global technology leader, and today, a primary partner in leading AI lab, OpenAI
3. Dollar Shave Club: founded during the 2008 recession and grew to become a $1 billion company in just 5 years
4. Xero: established during the 2006-2008 financial crisis, Xero now serves over 2 million subscribers across the globe with financial management and accounting solutions.

As Benjamin Franklin famously put it, "out of adversity comes opportunity"

Where do you see the biggest opportunities in your business, category, or audience today?

A September 2022 survey found that the average website conversion rate for Shopify stores was just 1.4%.

Conversion rates of more than 4.7% would put a store in the best 10%.

The lesson here is simple; if you want to be above average, don't just use a standard website template, copy your competitors or chase popular website design trends blindly. Instead, build a tailored customer experience, one that is designed for your specific audience.

You could make 3x more sales (maybe even more) in the long run.

Research on a global scale has been done to help NZ exporters answer some key questions; how does the world perceive the NZ brand, and what should marketers do about that?

The research highlights some key tenants of conversion optimisation. Here's our hot take as it applies to international ecommerce.

- Build value; products need to have key points of difference. Understand your customers passions and pain points. Local distribution, customer service and quick delivery are key.

- Communicate value. Simple, clear and targeted omni channel messaging. People buy from personalities and brands they are familiar with. When budgets are tight, people take less risks.

- Justify your value. Is your proposition actually unique? It's possible, but unlikely for the things that really matter to customers. Put more effort into figuring out why customers should buy from you, instead of competitors. Look closely at claim substantiation - greenwashing doesn't cut it in 2021.
