Saying goodbye to 2022 and an exciting hello to 2023 for the Mills household!

Two becomes Three. Meg and I are thrilled to be welcoming our first pēpi (baby) into our family this year. The little one is due in February and we look forward to embracing all the challenges of parenthood as well as the joy and love that comes with it.

The logo I designed for Hypha Eco-Impact Advisory.

In biology, a hypha is a filamentous structure that forms the main body of a fungus and is responsible for the growth and propagation of the organism. A hypha consists of one or more cells that grow and branch out in a network-like fashion.

I had the chance to hop onto the tail end of schools' workshop last week.

In a nutshell, the brief was for the visiting high school students to use their school’s motto to typographically represent their version of “SCHOOL SPIRIT”. This was then added to Sheahan's template and printed out in colour passes on our Risograph machine.

I thought this would be a fun opportunity to experiment with copy, Ai prompting, and Riso printing. I have used my own high school as inspiration here and combined Victorian architecture with an assegai spear as Maritzburg College is known for its rich Anglo/Zulu history. Plus a typographic expression of the motto of "Pro aris et focis", Latin for "For hearth and home".

An interesting result here with the juxtaposition of combining the deep learning algorithm and this retro tech output.

The Notorious B.I.G. x Jean-Michel Basquiat. An Ai Collab.

I have been experimenting with famous lyrics and renowned artists' aesthetic styles as prompt engineering in Mid Journey - Ai.

It often feels like shooting in the dark but every now and then the random results are fascinating from a semiotic point of view, considering the Ai algorithm is pulling information from thousands of images across the internet.

The artworks above stem from the lyrical rap line “Pink gators, my Detroit players, Timbs for my hooligans in Brooklyn.”

This is taken from the single “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. as well as additional text prompting the painting style of Basquiat.

The "pink" is obvious as the textured backgrounds but there is something really intriguing about the pairs of masks that have been produced. A hybrid of American sports gear (Ice hockey and American football helmets) and the traditional African masks that inspired Basquiat’s work. The footwear theme also comes through strongly in the sets of two and the foot-like silhouettes of these “hooligans”.

One starts to question what sort of impact prompt engineering will have on the notions of authorship and intellectual property as well as the creation of meaning itself in this age of artificial intelligence.
