As tourism increases in any region, the aim to minimize the impact of tourism and the surge in people on that region is something more and more tourism operators are looking to manage with sustainable practices. This includes making sure both the natural 🌿 (such as beaches, forests, and waterways) and built environments 🕍 (such as historic buildings and ruins) are properly preserved, maintained and care for.

Incredibly sad to see the Notre-Dame fire take down the Cathedrals' spire, forever changing the landmark. Heartened to hear that France's president vows to rebuild.

Here are a few ideas around practicing sustainable tourism in your business. Do you implement any of these?

The outdoor viewing decks are a unique selling point of the Great Journeys of New Zealand. Pity tourists couldn't heed the warnings not to hang outside the viewing decks to take selfies - I remember this being a very real safety hazard when I was the digital marketing manager there

KiwiRail is reviewing the use of outdoor viewing carriage after tourists put themselves in danger leaning out to take photos.

👑 If CONTENT is king, then DISTRIBUTION is queen 👑

❓Do you agree ❓

🧐 A well thought out content distribution strategy allows the marketer to place valuable content right where the audience actually is.

Distribution allows content to reap its benefits by amplifying it to the audience it was initially intended for.

Content and distribution work hand in hand. Do you know where to distribute your content to find your ideal customer, do you know where they hang out or is your strategy more just a mish mash of trial and error❓

Check out my video from earlier today to understand what types of content on Facebook are working right now.

In a previous role I fully explored the depth of the word 🌿MA N A A K I T A N G A 🌿 and it’s importance in Māori culture as well as it’s link to New Zealand’s world class 🌎 Tourism sector.

I’ve always believed that apart from our beautiful landscape, the people are what make New Zealand 🇳🇿 a beautiful place to visit and live.

100% Pure New Zealand Tourism sums it up so well ➡️➡️

“For New Zealand’s Māori people, being hospitable, looking after visitors and caring how others are treated - no matter what their standing in society - is of prime importance.

The traditional value of manaakitanga in Māori culture has had a positive influence on the unique Kiwi-style hospitality that makes a New Zealand visit memorable.

As is the case with many Māori words - the meaning of manaakitanga is much broader than a one word or direct translation.

It can be broken down into three parts: mana-ā-ki which loosely translates as 'the power of the word' and reminds hosts to be expressive and fluent in welcoming visitors.

Another explanation has the words mana / prestige and ki te tangata / to the people - pointing out the importance of enhancing the mana which covers the integrity, status / prestige, and power of guests.”

Over the past week our country, my home - Aotearoa, has shown M A N A A K I T A N G A in our warmth, empathy and welcoming to ALL kiwis regardless of race or religion 🙏🏾

🌍If you are a savvy travel brand, chances are you are clued into the benefits of user generated content (UGC) as part of your marketing mix 📸

And under that umbrella of UGC, It's also pretty common place to use micro-influencers to help promote your activity through hashtags ( #) and on the visual social platform of Instagram.

Choose your influencers wisely, as most people are now hip to overly processed photos with fake blue skies, shiny buildings, purple water...and uncrowded hot spots (the really ah-mazing places always have some sort of line!)

The right influencer will still be able to get the great shots without adding a gazillion filters and spending hours in photoshop.
