This months is The Brand Gap by Marty Neumeier.

First published in 2003, long before social media, smartphones, content marketing, and AI, The Brand Gap has become one of the most influential books in modern branding.

More than two decades later, its central message remains remarkably relevant.
At the time, branding was often viewed as a downstream marketing activity.
Something that happened after the business strategy was complete.
A logo.
A visual identity.
A communications exercise.

The Brand Gap challenged that thinking.
Its core idea is simple:
The strongest brands are created when business strategy and customer experience work together.

The technology surrounding brands has changed dramatically since 2003.
The number of channels has exploded.
Consumer attention has fragmented.
AI can now generate content, campaigns and creative assets in seconds.
Yet the fundamental challenge remains exactly the same:

How do you create a clear, differentiated meaning in people's minds?
A few insights that stood out on a recent reread:
• Differentiation still beats visibility – being seen more often is rarely enough if people can't tell you apart.
• Clarity creates value – the brands that win are often the easiest to understand, not the most complex.
• Brand and business strategy are inseparable – branding isn't a communications exercise; it's a business decision.
• Consistency builds trust – every interaction either reinforces or weakens what a brand stands for.

Perhaps the most relevant idea in 2026 is this:
As AI makes content easier to create, distinctiveness becomes more valuable.
When everyone can generate more marketing, the advantage shifts to having a clearer point of view, a stronger position and a more meaningful story.
That's not a technology problem.
It's a brand problem.
And that's exactly the gap Neumeier was writing about more than 20 years ago.

For marketers, business leaders and founders, The Brand Gap remains a concise reminder that brands aren't built through volume.

They're built through clarity.

In healthcare marketing, we often talk about patients as consumers.
But there’s another audience that behaves in very similar ways.

Doctors.
Doctors are also consumers of communication, brand signals and professionalism.

They respond to clarity.
They notice visual quality.
They form impressions based on how something looks and feels.

At Spruik, we call this “The Dual Consumer.”
When healthcare campaigns recognise that both audiences share certain motivations, something interesting happens.

A single creative platform can often work across both groups.
The overlapping drivers are surprisingly human:

• Intrigue
• Clarity
• Empathy
• Access
• Affordability

Which means good design does far more than decorate a message.
It builds trust, communicates credibility, and makes ideas easier to understand.
In our latest article we explore:

• The concept of the Dual Consumer in healthcare marketing
• The motivations doctors and patients often share
• Seven design principles that improve the effectiveness of healthcare campaigns

Because in regulated sectors like healthcare, design isn’t cosmetic - it’s strategic.
It’s often the difference between being noticed, understood… or ignored.

Congratulations to our Creative Director, Stacey Morrissey, on joining the judging panel for the YouTube NZ Marketing Awards 2026.

Stacey brings a rare mix of strategic thinking and creative rigour to every project she touches, so it’s great to see that recognised at an industry level.

Looking forward to seeing the work that shapes the next chapter of marketing and brand creativity in Aotearoa.

We’re proud to announce that Spruik® has been shortlisted in the Transform Awards ANZ 2025 - recognition not just of creative craft, but of the strategic effectiveness behind it.

The Transform Awards celebrate excellence in rebranding and brand development across the Asia-Pacific region. Recognised internationally, the awards honour agencies whose brand strategy, design and ex*****on deliver measurable impact.
In the ANZ programme, entries showcase how organisations in Australia and New Zealand are driving innovation, cultural relevance and effectiveness through brand.

Our work has been selected in two categories:

• Best Localisation of an International Brand – with Aspen Pharma Group, where aligning global assets to local insights created stronger resonance with Kiwi audiences.

• Best Brand Development Project to Reflect a Change of Mission, Values or Positioning – with Action Ed, where a refreshed brand now reflects their true purpose and amplifies their impact in the community.

For us, awards aren’t just about design or ex*****on. They’re about showing how insight-driven strategy translates into effectiveness, whether that’s cultural relevance, audience connection, or long-term brand strength.

A big thank you to Aspen Pharma Group New Zealand and Action Ed for trusting us with their brands, and to the Spruik team for proving that when strategic clarity underpins crafted creative work, brands don’t just look better - they perform better.
