Have you ever googled your service to check out what others are doing? 👀

It sounds stalky, but this little exercise can provide you with important feedback.

What do you feel when looking at everyone else's online presence? If it is any of the following, we need to talk.

- They come across much more professional
- My visual brand looks messy compared to this
- This has so much more personality
- Their message is really clear, I need to up my game

And I am not suggesting you go and copy what everyone else is doing. Quite the opposite. What I’m saying is: go and understand the market, find your niche and claim it with confidence. Find out what makes your business unique and different to everyone else. Why should we pick you?

If your brand doesn't reflect your businesses personality and level of quality and expertise, you have outgrown it. A professional brand is not a nice to have, it is essential for every business wanting to grow.

So if this is the point you are at in your business journey, let’s have a chat. I help ready-to-grow business owners make the jump from DIY design to a strategic straightforward brand.

Send me a message here or head to my website to book a call. I’ll leave a link in the comments.

Have you ever opened a website, thought “no way!” and closed it?

When someone lands on your website or social media page for the first time you only have seconds to convince them they are in the right place.

The first impression is a quick glance, taking in the whole picture presented in seconds.

Here are a couple of facts I found on the WIX blog:

“According to a Forbes Advisor study, 61% of website users will leave if they can’t find what they’re looking for within about five seconds.”

“Research from Missouri University of Science and Technology further shows that users form impressions of a website within two-tenths of a second or less. They tend to fixate on critical design elements like your logo and main image, which can hold their attention for a few seconds longer. “

So what do people find on your website in

1 …

2 …

3 … seconds?

What are they feeling?

Last week was the half way mark of my first 12 week year. And as someone who has items on their to-do-list until infinity I am proud to report … I failed half of the time 🙃 And the best part, I didn't even know I was failing.

Because something interesting had happened. My copilot lowered the 85% benchmark to 60% and kept cheering me on. When confronted the reply was:

We deliberately lowered your “success threshold” to 60% to:
- avoid perfectionism
- prevent overwhelm
- build consistency first
- make the system sustainable

😅

But guess what? It worked!

Who is in charge here? What do you think?

I am designing a lot of ads at the moment.

The briefs can vary from “Here is my logo and a link to my website.” to a full brand kit including detailed brand guidelines. This is fantastic, more businesses are getting support with building a solid brand system. But when I dig deeper I find it’s not actually consistently used across all platforms.

The website often uses the logo and maybe some of the colours but that is it. The fonts are something standard, the character of the message is gone and generic, the imagery style was replaced by mismatched stock or phone photography. Same story on the social channels.

So there is a block somewhere between a good brand with guidelines and the implementation. How can this be fixed?

One way is to engage a brand guardian to look after your brand for you. If this sounds like something you’ve been waiting for, book a free call to hear more about my brand guardianship options. Message me on here or find a link in the comments.

When talking to non-designers DIYing their branding and design, these are often the things I hear:

+ A frustrating amount of time spent on DIY design.
+ The outcome of my DIY design is disappointing.
+ I am embarrassed of my messy brand.
+ Not enough marketing efforts because of overwhelm.

When we look at what is going on, the problem is not necessarily a lack of design skills, but a lack of brand systems, systems in general and templates.

Fast forward … once we created systems and templates my clients can go two separate ways:

Client A realises that everything is much easier when someone else is looking after their brand and hand it over to me, their brand guardian.

Client B feels empowered and tackles their DIY design with new enthusiasm and a solid system as guide-rails.

If you want to get your brand in order and are considering building solid systems and templates get in touch and book a call.

Working on long form complex documents is one of my favourite jobs as a designer. So naturally it was a pleasure being part of the redesign for the Dive Pacific magazine.

Thank you for your feedback Catherine!

"I worked with Linda as Editor of Dive Pacific, the media and communications branch of the New Zealand Underwater Association. Linda worked as a graphic designer on both the print and digital aspects of the platform, and was instrumental in ensuring our content was visually appealing, easy to understand and used images that created a story in its own right. Linda's eye for pulling out and highlighting the more inspiring aspects of imagery, while ensuring plenty of room for editorial, is very useful for me as an editor, as is her skill at making copy not look text-heavy. With a topic like marine, it can be tricky not to end up with a 'bunch of blue' on the page, but thanks to Linda's creativity, we managed to produce content that not only attracted an audience, but also brought depth and interest to the pages."

School photo day at B-Media.

At first, this brought up terrible memories of my high school year in Kentucky. Awkwardly waiting in line until you get a fake top prop thrown onto your shoulders. “Smile … next!”.

But thankfully, this shoot was nothing like that. Shoutout to Amanda Billing and Alison Brewer (hair and makeup) for making it all feel low-fuss and genuinely comfortable. The focus was on looking like yourself. Natural light, relaxed atmosphere, no turning you into a different person. And the outcome says it all. Thank you for a photo I will actually use : )

If you have been avoiding headshots because you can’t think of anything worse than standing in front of a camera, get in touch with Amanda and Alison.

Thank you Brydie Canham for organising this day.

And lastly, this is also a good reminder that photos in general, but also headshots, are part of your brand. When did you last update your team headshots?

Is your logo kit complete?

When you hand your logo to a contractor (web developer, sign writer, content creator, or for print ads), do they have everything they need? Or do they come back asking for a vector file, a horizontal version, a reversed-out version, a logo on transparent background …

The back-and-forth costs time and patience. Time better spent on growing your business.

The easiest way to avoid it is to have a complete logo kit on hand: every key logo version, the right file formats and a short logo guide with simple instructions on how to use it. Bundle it all up and send it along with every brief. Problem solved.

If you don’t have a logo kit or it is incomplete, take a look at my Logo Kit Pack (starting from NZ$400). I’ve put the link in the comments, or you can message me here.

Networking, yikes, right?

That used to be my reaction whenever someone suggested it. But a few years later, I am a “convert.”

This week, I went to a LinkedIn Locals event for the first time. This would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago. It’s a big event with lots of people, but what I really enjoyed was that it was deliberately not about exchanging business cards and selling to each other, it was about genuine connection.

I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories, especially those full of passion for what they do. It’s inspiring. I go home motivated and ready to tackle the next thing.

And I love seeing familiar faces. Thank you for the warm welcome, Sarah Davies. It turned out to be a nice photo. No one will ever know that I’m balancing a plate of food behind my back : )

It's always good to meet a digital contact in person. Nice to see one of my co-working buddies IRL, Sandra Maddison.

If you’re still in the “networking-phobia” stage and think it might be easier to go to an event with a familiar face by your side, send me a message here and we’ll go together.
