What's the deal with "clean?" It's our AI tell of the month, and for good reason. “Clean” has become AI tools' go-to word for sounding low-risk and not too emotional, controversial, or complex. We're filtering it from our writing and using stronger synonyms instead. Consider streamlined, restrained, spacious, direct, simple, polished, structured, uncluttered, minimal, crisp, focused, legible, cohesive, or straightforward. Or, simply rewriting the sentence so it doesn’t need an adjective at all.

Which AI output word or phrase has made it onto your "do not use" list?

Ah, the power of a definitive name modifier. Brand Strategy + Communications. It's what we've always done, and now it's on the door. More exciting brand updates to come!

New headshots unlocked! In service-based businesses, people fuel the product. Clients buy expertise, judgment, and problem-solving skills, which is why the faces behind the services matter. Sharp, updated photography tells your clients, "We take ourselves seriously, and so should you." which is why we recommend updating your brand images and headshots every two years.

Brands that put their experts' faces front and center will come out on top in our increasingly AI-ified world. For Muse, and our clients, we lean on our trusted pool of talented photographers for scroll-stopping imagery. We recently collaborated with KLS Creative whose background in LA fashion and celebrity photography brought a new level of glamour to our strategic minds!

Blending creativity with strategy. It's what we do! We're proud to partner with teams who value that combination, like WTM Digital. Thank you for the kind words.

This 'tell' has been running rampant lately! AI has slipped this word into so much content that our inboxes have quietly (see what we did there?) become overrun with it. Its sibling, "silently," has also been on the rise.

"This can quietly sink your credibility."
"It's the quiet discipline of actually showing up."
"These risks can silently destabilize your program."

Why "quietly?" AI is trying to mimic tension in writing. "Quietly" is typically used to quickly soften something significant without needing to build a lengthy narrative. AI has picked up on this and uses it as a writing shortcut. But not all writing needs this level of profound tension. Simply cut "quietly" or rework your copy.

"This can quietly sink your credibility." -> "This can sink your credibility."
"It's the quiet discipline of actually showing up." -> "It takes discipline to show up for your team."
"These risks can silently destabilize your program." -> "If left unchecked, these risks can destabilize your program."

What other AI writing styles or words are "quietly" annoying you?

Last month, our Associate Director of Content presented to dozens of school nutrition professionals about how Canva and storytelling are fuel for their schools' nutrition programs. "Plating Your Message: How Canva Can Help Bring School Nutrition Stories to Life" used samples of our work with Feedourfutureohio as a best-in-class showcase of branding and storytelling in action. Thank you to the Ohio Schools Council Fresh Perspectives Local Food and Inspired Learning Food Service Staff Conference for having us!

Worried about standing out in a sea of AI-generated content? Here's an idea: put your people in your promotions. Read on for a few fresh ideas!

1. Promote insider ideas: For Nestlé Professional Solutions, we recommended that two of their top chefs take center stage in a webinar with Nation's Restaurant News. The result was an educational and entertaining experience that connected with prospects far more effectively than an AI-crafted product sell sheet.
2. Find new formats to feature your people: For Feedourfutureohio, we created collectible, baseball-style food producer cards for classrooms to help kids learn where food comes from.
3. Let your clients tell your story: For Richardson Design, we interviewed the CFO of Aladdin’s Eatery Systems for a case study. Our client, DeliverThat, takes a similar approach through its DeliveringMore podcast, which regularly features candid client conversations.

AI can support these, but the character and voice still need to be yours. Are you ready to add more authentic brand voice to your content? Let's talk! https://www.museheadquarters.com/connect/

The Truth Booth for Entrepreneurs' Organization worked when it launched, and it would work just as well today, because it's all about people. If we built this campaign today, we'd lean on AI to streamline some production aspects and perhaps move faster from concept to camera. The heart of the concept, though, would stay untouched: real EO members, authentic stories, zero scripts. Some formulas don't need reinventing, just refining. Let's collaborate on how to spotlight your members or customers in engaging content campaigns. Connect here: https://www.museheadquarters.com/connect/

Protecting today, preserving tomorrow. We were excited to take the lead again on creative direction and layout design for the Spring/Summer issue of Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park's magazine! This is what happens when design and storytelling coexist from the start of a project. Be sure to follow them for upcoming events and Cuyahoga Valley National Park news.

We already know about AI overusing the em dash and its stunted sentence structure, but there are new overuses to edit out weekly.

Enter: our new series "AI 'Tells' of the Month." At least once a month, we'll share the AI writing "tells" our editing team catches and adds to our “DO NOT USE” list so AI-assisted drafts don’t sound robotic.

The sentence above is a good example. An AI draft would likely read: "...so AI-assisted drafts don’t feel robotic." Instead of saying something sounds conversational, appears credible, or seems authentic, AI often defaults to "feel." It's a subtle inclusion, but once you notice it, you'll start seeing it everywhere.

Do you have an AI "tell" that's driving you crazy? Share with us here.
