Today was one of those days in my office when I had to Google what I was advertising—just to know what something in one of my ad photos is or does. The reason today? "Late-model LTCC, photolithography, precision lapping, laser processing, metrology, class-rated cleanroom equipment, and electroplating" for one of CA Global Partners' California auctions. I have a weird job. (You don't have to tell me. I know.😂) It's an adventure and a half, and I'm only grateful for it.

There’s a moment as a boy in America when you realize that your LEGO (Denmark) and Playmobil (Germany) trucks look different from the ones you see out your minivan window. That intrigued little dude deep down in me still gets stoked when I see cool units during my trips to Europe. Today, that fascination went to a whole new level when I got to advertise some rad units in the United Kingdom for Charlie Foyle Auctioneers. Check them out!

Because of what I do on my days off (hanging or jumping off buildings, mountains, and aircraft), I've gotten a reputation as "adventure guy." But I get physically nervous far more often at my desk—like yesterday, when CA Global Partners assigned me the adventure of advertising the liquidation of an advanced EV battery tech company. Multiple people's livelihoods are dependent on me finding buyers for something I know nothing about. I'm thankful for intuitive partners, gracious clients, and great resources available to marketers that weren't available when I started Biplane 24 years ago.

A big smile crossed my face after reading this email from Kristin Halfhill Larimore after Halfhill Auction Group's recent multipar auction. "Yesterday’s auction was a tremendous success! We had 40 registered bidders, and the online-only multi-par auction was scheduled to end at 12 noon with a soft close. We had bidding extensions for just over an hour and a half, and a property that we anticipated bringing somewhere around $600,000 brought a high bid of $954,000!!!"

That paired well with this email from Pete Ramsey after The Counts Realty & Auction Group's land auction last week: "We had a very successful sale today ... The good news is we exceeded the seller’s expectations by almost 30%."

As the A-Team used to say in the 1980s, "I love it when a plan comes together."

My client asked me to build a separate ad for this one excavator attachment, separate from the rest of his campaign. That piqued my interest, as I had not seen one of these before. After some Googling, I learned that this thing is worth $150,000 brand new—more than I paid for my first house. And it was used only once. If you know what this is, comment below how it's used on a job site.

My Saturday shift encapsulated the diversity of what fills my three iMac monitors in a given workday. I created advertising for
• an 8,400+SF oceanfront home in Rhode Island
• construction equipment in Tennessee
• farm machinery in Arkansas
• bakery equipment in Michigan
• three estate sales filled with recreational vehicles, vintage coin-operated carousels, and antique tractors in Illinois.

If you’d have told the college senior version of me that my day job would look like that, he’d have asked, “Wait. What? How!?” I’m so grateful for the auctioneers who trust me with their livelihoods and their sellers’ hopes.

That's a lot of eyeballs!
Thom Mau of Fleet Vehicle Disposal and Commercial Liquidations hired me to build a campaign that pointed to a landing page for his series of 10 auctions for one seller: a Porsche dismantler in North Carolina. In total, 1.9 million prospects saw the ads 4.1 million times. Thom got a lot of traffic from his bold campaign, as 200,000 people clicked on at least one of the 13 different ads an average of 1.3 times each.

I've been around equipment auctioneers too long.

Yesterday, my wife and I attended a wedding at a gorgeous venue (a highland cattle farm that's booked with weddings almost every Saturday for the next 3 years—hence a Sunday ceremony).

We got there early enough to have our choice of parking spots. While the other guests crowded the side of the lot closest to the wedding site, I parked over by the equipment shed to get a look at the tractor and hay equipment. "Those are some clean units," I told my wife as we walked in our formal clothes. "I sell a lot of hay rakes like that one."

Last Wednesday, I sent the Facebook results report for an estate auction to Barry & Christy Cole. I noted that I hoped the auction outperformed the Facebook ads, which hadn't performed as well as those from other recent campaigns.

Barry replied, "Ryan, last night‘s auction was nothing short of amazing. Everybody sat with their mouth hanging open, watching this thing unfold in an amazing way. Whatever you did, clone it! We had three times the number of participants and three times the number of page openings. The results were double my best guess, which is hard to do."

Christy replied, "Last night, antiques were selling for prices that Dad hasn’t seen in quite a few years, for our area. We had the largest amount of registered bidders and views that we have ever seen. To say it was an impressive and exciting night almost feels like an understatement."

For sure, I've had auctions go the other way: amazing Facebook stats with underwhelming bidder participation. Facebook stats will often be proportional to website traffic and participation. They almost always contribute to the story of the auction. But not always. The same goes even for bidder registrations. At the end of the day, the only numbers that count are sale prices. My goal is to make superlative high bids as likely as possible with the tools and experience I've learned from the past 12,000+ auctions I've advertised.

I'm seeing life in 12k. 😎 Last week, Biplane Productions advertised its 12,000th auction. At the auction company where I worked before starting this freelance gig, I advertised about 150 auctions per year. At that rate, it would've taken me almost 80 years to market this many auctions. So, back in 2002, I never imagined this milestone was possible. I can't thank auctioneers enough for trusting me with their livelihoods for auctions across 49 states and 7 countries.
