It's built.

They’re calling it “mass layoffs.” They’re calling it “cost-cutting.

The Highwomen by The Highwomen (2019)

We are The Highwomen
Singing stories still untold
We carry the sons, you can only hold
We are the daughters of the silent generations
You sent our hearts to die alone in foreign nations
It may return to us as tiny drops of rain
But we will still remain

Remembering Lynn Eusan

In 1968, Lynn Cecilia Eusan made history as the first Black Homecoming Queen at a predominantly white Southern university—breaking barriers at the University of Houston.

But Lynn was more than a title. She was a fierce student activist, a co-founder of UH’s African American Studies program, and helped launch the SHAPE Community Center—an anchor for Black empowerment in Houston.

Tragically, her life was cut short in 1971 under unresolved and heartbreaking circumstances.

Her legacy still echoes through the halls of UH and the heart of Houston.

Let’s remember her not just for what she achieved—but for the revolution she lived.

If one looks at the history of struggles against racism in the U.S., no change has ever happened simply because the president chose to move in a more progressive direction. Every change has come as a result of mass movements — from the era of slavery, the Civil War, the involvement of Black people in the Civil War, which really determined the outcome. Many people are under the impression that it was Lincoln, who played the major role, and he did as a matter of fact help to accelerate the move toward abolition, but it was the decision on the part of slaves to emancipate themselves and to join the Union Army — both women and men — that was primarily responsible for the victory over slavery. It was the slaves themselves and of course the abolitionist movement that led to the dismantling of slavery. When one looks at the civil rights era, it was those mass movements — anchored by women, incidentally — that pushed the government to bring about change.

In our quest for liberation, we must look to the wisdom of our ancestors. The Imbongi, the praise singer, is not just an artist but a vessel of collective history, resilience, and power. Through their words, the Imbongi connects us to our past, calls forth our ancestors’ strength, and envisions a future rooted in dignity and freedom.

In a world designed to profit from our oppression, marketing can be more than just a business tool—it can be an act of radical resistance. When we align our practices with the ideals of Black liberation, we create a new path forward. The Imbongi reminds us that the power to deconstruct capitalism and reshape our world is embedded within our culture and our voices.

Let us honor these ancestral pathways, and through our work, reclaim the narratives that have been denied to us. Our liberation is not just possible; it is necessary.

Contentious: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial. “a contentious issue”

in Reincarnated, preaches through the reincarnation of Satan into musical artists through centuries the ancient spirits we battle as we strive towards righteousness.

He reconciles with his imperfection, despite his stellar character as a black man in America, an artist in hip-hop and a local citizen to his beloved community.

The devil within is echoed in the Spanish translation of the opening operatic number :

What does your gaze reflect?

She is us.

The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius: The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury. We will not become our oppressors.

We have the roadmap for these times in the storied lives of our Ancestors.
