I love using my web development and social media skills to support area non-profits. I fell in love with this sector when I worked at Blackbaud. I love how passionate people are about working in their communities to make a difference.

I've been blessed to be working Susan Elsworth and Central Indiana NOFAS, Inc, which focuses on educating the public about fetal alcohol syndrome. "FASD" so much more complex than I ever understood or appreciated.

Today's Helpful Byte: How To Keep your Website Fresh

I found this article helpful for two reasons.

First, I really love TechSoup as a resource for non-profits. In addition to discounted IT products and services, their blog/newsletter provides useful technology guidance for non-profits.

Second, the article covers some solid "basics" for websites. One doesn't have to spend a lot of time or money for an online presence. But it's helpful to know where and how to spend limited resources.

The 5 points covered are:
1. Your Website Is a Place for Stories
2. Inspire People with Useful Calls to Action
3. Set Measurable Objectives
4. Collect and Create Images
5. Increase Your Capacity and Keep Your Online Presence Alive

And consistent with the article's theme, there is a "call to action" in the end! What action will your organization take today to ensure your website is fresh?

Today's Helpful Byte: I received this Google docs phishing scam email yesterday. Read more about why it's catching people off guard in the attached article.

I knew enough to mark it as spam and move on... but this is a great reminder to watch what you click unless you're certain it was sent by someone you know. Even then, if an email with a link or attachment comes to me out of the blue" from someone I know, or it lacks something very personal (not just my name!), I'll contact the sender first before opening.

Even with 20+ years of IT experience, it can be difficult to balance keeping up-to-date with all of the latest software updates. As a general rule of thumb, I keep up to date with releases and updates because there are often bug fixes and security updates. Occasionally, there are major changes to the look and feel, or new features - which might have a small learning curve because things have been moved around, etc. [ 46 more words ]
