Arkansas is stronger because of the dedicated newspaper professionals who ensure their communities have access to the information they need, but the challenges facing the newspaper industry are greater than ever. We were sorry to hear of yesterday’s staff cuts at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and recognize the personal and professional impact on those affected.

Rebecca McGraw learned to read by sitting in her dad's lap as he read the newspaper to her -- starting at age one. He taught her how to sound out words by reading the headlines and the ads. He had her reading by age four.

Today, Rebecca is still reading and supporting newspapers through her integral role at the Arkansas Press Association. In this week's feature, she reflects on her 24 years (so far) at APA as a media buyer.

APA Board Member Jeremy Gulban, CEO of CherryRoad Media, was recently installed as chair of the National Newspaper Association.

In just six years, Gulban has expanded CherryRoad Media holdings to 103 newspapers in 19 states — including six newspapers in Arkansas.

We offer our love and sympathy to the family and friends of Jan Schick, who died this past Sunday, October 11.

As the wife of longtime APA Executive Director Dennis Schick, Jan served APA and the newspaper industry for 25 years as executive assistant, from 1979 until their mutual retirement in 2004.

Her service will be at 11 a.m. this Friday, October 16, at Lakewood United Methodist Church in North Little Rock. Her obituary can be found at: smithfamilycares.com/obituaries/w-jan-schick.
