Dear GreenMellen, I used to get a lot of traffic from Google, and now I don't. What happened? โ Losing Traction
Dear Traction, Youโre not imagining it, and youโre not doing anything wrong. In May 2024, Google rolled out โAI Overviews,โ AI-generated summaries that now sit at the top of many search results pages, above everything else, including your website. When Google answers a question right there on the page, a lot of people never click through to anyoneโs site at all. Research shows people are half as likely to click a link when an AI Overview appears, and some businesses have reported traffic drops of 70% or more as a result.
The cruel irony: Google may be using your content to generate those summaries, and then sending the traffic nowhere.
The hard truth is that traffic from Google was always borrowed; you never really owned it. The businesses holding up best right now are the ones that built real relationships alongside their rankings: an email list, a referral network, and clients who send other clients their way. Google canโt take those channels away.
SEO still matters, but the content that survives is specific, human, and experience-driven, which is the kind of thing AI canโt answer for you. If you want to discuss these changes more and how you can stay relevant, contact the GreenMellen team today.
