Show description:
Design has always been political. The question is who gets to say so, and at what cost. In this episode of Design is Everywhere, Guest Editor of Unfold 002: The Dissent Issue Rania Adwan sits down with Sabiha Basrai—designer, organizer, and co-owner of Design Action Collective—to talk about twenty years at the intersection of graphic design and social justice: what the industry did and didn’t do when the world got harder, who has always had to resist and who is only now arriving at it, and what it actually costs to build something outside the system.

What is the designer’s role in the climate crisis?

Design Action partnered with NewMexicoWomen.Org to create The Landscape of Gender Justice in New Mexico: 2025 Status Report—a detailed, qualitative roadmap for measurable progress. The report identifies the barriers and leverage points shaping gender justice statewide, and outlines strategic pathways for policy change and funding that help women and girls lead self-sufficient, healthy, and empowered lives in New Mexico.

We worked with the client to create customized illustrations and infographics that told their stories, highlighted their victories, and underscored the urgency of their mission. The colors, imagery, and tone were carefully designed to reflect and resonate with their distinct community base—helping bring their work to life and move people to action.

Design Action Collective collaborated with Spitfire Strategies to support The BIPOC Arts Network and Fund (BANF) arts advocacy nonprofit in Houston in a collaborative process to embrace a new name, a new visual identity, and broadened mission. The newly named Houston in Color launched its new identity and website with a commitment to resourcing Houston area artists. 🔥 Netroots Nation 2026 is here!

How can we win the battle of the story in this moment of authoritarian consolidation? How can graphic designers, artists, and media makers learn from past movements to create strategic visual communications that help win campaigns today?

Join us for "Design on Democracy: Media Makers Resisting Fascism" this Thursday, June 4 at 10:30 AM—a timely conversation exploring tools, practices, and real-world case studies from creatives on the frontlines of narrative change and movement building.

We’re especially excited that our own Sabiha Basrai will be part of this powerful panel, sharing insights on the role of design, storytelling, and creative strategy in defending democracy and advancing social change.

If you’re at , add it to your schedule and join the conversation! ✨
