A couple of DAC's beloved worker-owners Andra and Miguel attended ComNET 2026--the annual gathering of The Communications Network--held last week in San Diego.

They presented a case study in a posted called “Trust, Speed and Purpose: How to design for Millions in 28 days”, and also got to meet with some current clients like our friends at Spitfire. They also made lots of new friends and connections, and even got to volunteer at PATH (a longtime community organization serving the unhoused in San Diego and other counties in California)!

🎉🎉🎉 Happy 20th DAC anniversary to our very own Sabiha Basrai!!! 🎉🎉🎉

"Today marks my 20 year anniversary as a member of Design Action Collective (not counting my summer internship in 2003). I am so grateful to the founders who took me on as a young designer and developed my political analysis in the post-9/11 era, and to all the Design Action members who model how to be an effective, accountable, and caring part of a collective. Being a member of a worker-owned cooperative dedicated to serving social justice movements was my dream job in 2006, and continues to be my dream job today. This work is hard, purposeful, and joyful, and I feel lucky to be in it for the long haul."

Design Action recently worked with RISE-SF (Refugee and Immigrant Solidarity in Education), an amazing and critical program supporting newcomer immigrant and refugee students in the San Francisco Unified School District, to create outreach posters and resource booklet for the youth and parents they serve. Because there are so many moving pieces in the work RISE-SF does--from navigating district dynamics to the targeting of these communities from ICE goons--we needed to create materials that are visually appealing but also accessible to multilingual parents and students.

With the posters, we created a series of four designs with positive and affirming messages of solidarity to these newcomer students and their families. These posters would be placed in classrooms, hallways, enrollment centers, and other district spaces to provide a softer landing for these families trying to get settled in the overwhelming and confusing city that San Francisco can sometimes be.

The QR code on the posters bring people to the resource booklets, which provide a comprehensive guide for newcomers to navigate important needs, from education to legal and interpretation services. The booklet has versions in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tagalog, and Spanish. The cover art incorporates the same branding and styling as the posters, maintaining consistency and recognition.

Design Action partnered with NewMexicoWomen.Org to create The Landscape of Gender Justice in New Mexico: 2025 Status Report—a detailed, qualitative roadmap for measurable progress. The report identifies the barriers and leverage points shaping gender justice statewide, and outlines strategic pathways for policy change and funding that help women and girls lead self-sufficient, healthy, and empowered lives in New Mexico.

We worked with the client to create customized illustrations and infographics that told their stories, highlighted their victories, and underscored the urgency of their mission. The colors, imagery, and tone were carefully designed to reflect and resonate with their distinct community base—helping bring their work to life and move people to action.

Back in 2020, Design Action worked with UUSC (the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee) to produce a 16-page report on the Syrian refugee crisis which includes a set of infographics.

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization advancing human rights together with an international community of grassroots partners and advocates.

Design Action Collective members spent an afternoon with Mixte Communications and Embold Research to compare notes on the data analysis, and graphic design, communications strategy fueling narrative change projects across the country as we face election season. We are grateful to be part of this ecosystem of work.
