Thinking about guesting on other podcasts? It’s way more than just a quick download spike. 🎙️
In our latest Office Hours session, Alex Sanfilippo from PodMatch and our very own Brian Cottington dropped some major insights on how strategic podcast guesting transforms your show behind the scenes.
Here are 3 big benefits you get when you step into the guest seat:
1️⃣ It sharpens your interviewing skills: Sitting on the other side of the mic helps you understand host-guest dynamics, making you a much stronger interviewer on your own show.
2️⃣ It boosts your SEO & AI discoverability: Guest appearances equal quality backlinks to your website or show. Those links signal authority to search engines and AI search tools alike.
3️⃣ It builds long-term industry network value: You aren’t just borrowing an audience, you’re connecting with like-minded creators for future collaborations, advice, and community cross-pollination.
Don’t sleep on guesting as a core growth engine!

If video podcasting is growing so quickly, does an audio-only podcast still make sense?
Yes but audio and video do different jobs.
Audio fits into routines where people can’t or don’t want to watch a screen. It can also support the kind of sustained listening and host connection that podcasts are known for.
Video brings a different advantage: discovery. It gives creators more ways to reach people on YouTube and social platforms, especially audiences who are already used to finding new shows through video.
The tradeoff is that video also brings more competition, more production work, and a greater need to think about packaging, retention, and platform behavior.
In our latest video, we break down:
→ Why audio-only podcasts still have an advantage
→ Where video can help with discovery and growth
→ What gets harder when you add video
→ Why audio and video may work better together than as an either/or choice

How much should audience potential influence the kind of podcast you make?
The host of The Delicious Culture with Jon Francois chose a ’90s rewatch format partly because he thought it could help him reach a bigger audience.
But over time, the workload started to outweigh the appeal. He realized he’d built the show around what seemed most likely to grow rather than what he most wanted to keep making.
That doesn’t mean audience potential shouldn’t matter. It means the format also has to fit the creator well enough to sustain.
Have you ever changed your show because the original idea stopped fitting you?

Before you add or rule out another ad in your podcast episode, check:

🎧 Your consumption data: Look for drop-offs around ad breaks and whether listeners leave the episode or return after the ad.

⏱️ Your episode length: Three ads across an hour-long conversation is very different from three ads in a 10-minute episode.

🎙️ Other shows in your niche: Pay attention to how other creators structure and space their ad breaks.

📍 Your transitions: Use natural breaks between segments or topics to make ads feel less disruptive.

And if you’re still wondering whether your show is too small for ads, whether your audience will tolerate them, or whether you’re putting them in the right places, Brian tackles all three in this video.

How are you handling ads on your show?

What can podcast revenue make possible beyond the podcast itself?
For Sarah Barnes-Humphrey , host of Blended, it helps put more people on industry stages.
Sarah created the Blended Pledge to help cover travel costs for people participating in supply chain events. Today, advertising revenue from her podcast goes back into the program to help fund those community grants.
“Every grant we’re able to give through the Blended Pledge nonprofit arm is a goal met. That’s the metric that matters most to me, more than podcast downloads.”
