I’ve been marketing for small businesses since 2013 (and can I brag about that minor in mathematics?)
Let’s bust a few myths about why your marketing campaign may be underperforming. Here's what I'm seeing from our tests:
❌ Myth #1: AI Is Your Most Important Traffic Source
In 2026, SEO continues to be the #1 or #2 revenue driver for most of our clients that have been in business for more than two years. Google Ads is typically the other major contributor.
Referral business usually ranks third, while Yelp, Bing, and AI-driven traffic tend to account for the last handful of jobs each month.
AI is growing, but for most local service businesses, it is not replacing strong organic rankings or paid search.
❌ Myth #2: Schema Markup Is a Magic Ranking Factor
Many AI and SEO influencers talk endlessly about Schema markup, but rarely provide evidence.
TopSEOFactors has repeatedly measured only a -0.16 correlation between Schema usage and ranking position. That’s an extremely small relationship.
In our own testing, we have not seen meaningful ranking improvements from Schema implementation alone, nor have we found a strong connection between Schema markup and inclusion in AI-generated search results.
❌ Myth #3: Topical Blog Posting Is All You Need
The latest trend is using AI to generate hundreds of keyword ideas and then mass-producing blog content to build “topical authority.”
The problem is that most of this content never earns citations, links, or visibility.
Instead, use tools like LLMLINKS.AI to identify where your competitors are being cited. Then create higher-quality resources that deserve to be referenced in those same places.
What DOES Work?
🟢 A High-Converting Landing Page
When you’re spending money on traffic, every visitor matters.
Your offer should be clear within three seconds. Make it easy for prospects to call, book, or request a quote. Add trust signals, reviews, certifications, and proof for visitors who need reassurance before taking action.
🟢 Sponsoring Local Events
Local recognition drives referrals and word-of-mouth business.
We're also seeing it be a powerful mover for inclusion in AI Overviews and for improvement in Google's SEO rankings. Don’t sleep on local signals.
🟢 Branded Vehicles
This is a weird one, but we are seeing that people often cite the branded vehicles as a reason for converting. Our A/B testing also shows that photos of branded vehicles enhance the Google Ads performance. (AI-Generated photos of branded vehicles hurt performance - at least in our testing.)
