The promise isn't made by your website. It's made by whatever they clicked.

It could come from ad headlines, search result titles, a map listing, or a post. That specific line is what got them to move. Then they land on a homepage built to say everything to everyone, and not one of the words they just read is on it.

If someone clicks "emergency water heater repair" and lands on a page that opens with when your company was founded, they have to do the translating. Most won't. They go back and click the next result.

You usually don't need a new page. You need the page to finish the sentence the click started.

We are closed today for Labor Day.

The holiday exists because people organized for the workweek most of us now take for granted. Worth remembering that it was won, not given.

We also know a lot of the businesses we work with do not get the day off. Somebody's water heater still goes out on a Monday, and somebody is still driving out to fix it. If that is you, thank you.

We will be back Tuesday morning.

Quick one before the long weekend.
Go look at the first three photos on your Google Business Profile.

Those are the ones most people actually see, and for a lot of businesses they are whatever got uploaded in 2019, plus whatever a customer posted from a parking lot.

Swap in three current ones. A clean exterior shot so people recognize the place when they pull up, your team or a truck, and one shot of finished work. Take them on a phone in daylight and they will be fine.

It is the closest thing you have to a storefront window, and it is free to update.

Labor Day is Monday. If your hours are changing, Google will not guess for you.

Open your Google Business Profile, go to Hours, and add special hours for September 7. If you are closed, mark it closed. If you are running a short window, put the real window in.

This matters more than it sounds. Your listed hours feed the "Open now" filter, so wrong hours can pull you out of results while people are actively searching. And a customer who calls a business that says it is open, then gets nothing, usually just moves to the next name on the list.

It takes about a minute. Set it while you are thinking about it and your clients will appreciate you so much more.

Most sites try to remove doubt about the business. The doubts people actually have are about themselves.

• Am I about to get taken advantage of?
• Is this going to cost more than I think?
• Will I have to be here all day?
• Am I going to look stupid for not knowing this already?
• What happens if it turns out to be worse than I thought?

None of that gets answered by another paragraph about your experience.

Read your homepage and count how many sentences are about you and how many are about what happens to the customer. Years in business, certifications, team size, all about you. What the visit looks like, what it costs, how long it takes, all about them.
Most sites run about ten to one the wrong direction.

You don't have to add anything. Just move the answers up.

Every trade has a peak season, and they land in different months depending on climate, category, and whether the work runs on weather, holidays, school calendars, or fiscal years.

The work that carries a peak season is the work that was already live before it started. Anything you begin once you're in it is late, for two reasons.

1. Algorithm lag
A new campaign, or a large change to an existing one, resets the learning period, so the platform spends your first weeks working out who to show it to. Organic runs even more slowly, since new pages and new reviews take weeks to get indexed and start counting for anything.

2. Capacity
You have none to spare during the weeks you're handling . That's the one people forget, because it isn't a marketing problem until it is.

So make it a calendar exercise. Name your next peak month, count back six weeks, which is roughly what the lag above costs you, and put a real date on it.

By that date, in the ads:
• Budget agreed for the higher cost per click that arrives when everyone bids at once
• Conversion tracking tested end to end, so you are not spending blind at your highest spend
• Last year's search terms mined for negatives
• Local Services Ads verification submitted, if you run them, since that clock is not yours to control

By that date, on the site:
• Mobile speed on your top page
• Service area pages that match where you actually work
• Review count and recency
• One page answering your highest-value question, near the top

Every one of these is easy in a slow month and impossible in a busy one.
Pick the date now.

Do you know your primary Google Business Profile category?

Google's own documentation describes local results as based on relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot move distance and prominence takes years. Your primary category is the most direct statement of relevance you get to make, and it's an option in a dropdown.

If you go too broad, where you picked the license category instead of the work you actually do, or drift, where the category fit the business in 2019 and nobody updated it since you expanded services, you could be damaging your search results.

1. Write down your current primary category.
2. Search your highest-value service the way a customer would type it.
3. Open two or three profiles from the map pack, their category is public, listed right under the business name.
4. Compare.

If they all share a category you are not in, you found something worth looking into.

Search your own business name and read what comes back above the results. A lot of your customers now see that AI summary instead of your website.

Pew Research tracked 900 US adults. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a search result 8% of the time instead of 15%. So that summary is doing work your homepage used to do, and you didn't get to write it.

But you can change what it gets built from; your website, your Google Business Profile, and your listings.

Try these three things in order:

Search your business name and write down everything the summary gets wrong. Old hours. A service you stopped offering. An address you moved out of. Fix each one where it actually lives, in your Google profile or on your site.
Not by contacting Google, which is not a thing you can do, save yourself the headache and wasted hours.

Then search your highest-value service the way a customer would say it. If a competitor gets named and you do not, open their page and look at what it answers that yours does not.

Then put real numbers on your own site. "Most repairs run $200 to $600" can get pulled out and repeated. "Affordable, honest pricing" cannot. That is the entire difference between getting quoted and getting skipped.

Your website gets reviewed on a desktop, on office wifi, by people who already know where everything is. Your customer has none of those three things.

They are on a phone, on a weak signal, one hand free, and they have never seen the page before.

So test it that way. Off wifi, standing outside, fifteen minutes.

Go the whole route. Search your business name, tap through from the result, find your hours, tap the phone number, go back, submit the contact form. Then go looking for that form email and find out whether it arrived at all, or landed somewhere nobody checks.

Most people turn up three or four things, and they are usually small. A phone number that will not tap because it was saved as an image. A page that takes eight seconds on cellular because nobody compressed the photo at the top.

Write down every place you slowed down or had to think about where to go next. That is your fix list, in priority order, and it cost you fifteen minutes.

Here's what makes this harder than it sounds: you will remember the interesting questions and forget the common ones.

The common ones are the valuable ones. A question you have answered forty times is a question forty customers had. The fact that it bores you by now is exactly why it never got written down.

So don't rely on noticing. Build a capture.

Keep one note open on your phone. Every time you answer a customer question, add the question. Just the question, not the answer. One line, four seconds.

At the end of the month, look for repeats. Anything you wrote down three or more times is a post, and you already know what to say.
