After boarding the ferry and crossing, we hopped into a Matatu van and took the hour plus ride to Diani Beach. Our main activity for the day was to visit the Kaya forest area to learn about the way of life that took place in the “holy forest”. We learned of various plants and fauna, customs and way of living in the forest plus more. This portion ended with a tribal dance circle, then we headed to Diani Beach for a minute of food and relaxation.

The fourth day of The Journey Series saw us take travels to a beachside area of Kenya called Diani. As always we started with a Swahili breakfast at the Gallery space, then hopped in some tuk-tuks to reach the Mombasa Port area. We had to take the ferry to reach Mombasa Island; which in itself was an experience to be had. Imagine what seems to be a few thousand people going back and forth at any time; crossing a waterway to conduct their business and personal lives. Such a sight to see. (Continued in Part 2)

After leaving Bombolulu we headed back to the Gallery for dinner, to which we ended the night with a group-conversation discussing the history, present-day and future of the Africa Nomad Collective. Key thoughts came from The Journey Project co-founder Rogier and Benny, plus Africa Nomads founder Benjamin Livoi and artists Benny Walia, Raphael Muchomba & Sally Bella.

Mombasa, Kenya: The Journey Series - Day 3 (Part 1)

The third day of The Journey Series was all about connecting with the community. We started the day off with a breakfast at the Gallery as we waited for our newest form of transportation: the “tuk-tuk”. Formally defined as “ a three-wheeled taxi that carries three to four riders on short urban and semi-urban routes” these vehicles are a mainstay of transportation within Kenya. Many regular, everyday citizens take these private taxis around on a daily basis. After we strapped into our tuk-tuks, we set off to Bombolulu Workshop & Cultural Center. Bombolulu Workshop is a social empowerment program that “supports artisans with disabilities by providing training, employment, and a platform to showcase their talents”. Managed by the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), the center also acts as a popular tourist attraction locally, offering cultural tours, performances and goods / products produced by resident artisans. The space offered the notion that disabled shouldn’t mean disenfranchised; as we were able to interact with hardworking creatives showcasing a wide variety of skills from jewelry making to textiles, leather goods, metal work and décor items. Mombasa, Kenya: The Journey Series - Day 1

The second day of The Journey series took us deeper into the culture and history of the city of Mombasa. We started with a ride in a “MATATU”; which is the Kenyan version of public bus transportation but complete with custom artwork exteriors, lights and custom sound systems. Destination? Fort Jesus.

A UNESCO World heritage site, Fort Jesus was built in the late 1500’s by the Portuguese as a military installation, key to the globalization and cultural exchange of the Indian Ocean trade. The fortification helped establish power and influence over the Swahili Coast for various cultural groups; seeing sieges and proxy wars fought between the Portuguese, Omani Arabs and the British Empires.

We then took a brief stroll through old town Mombasa, settled in 900 AD and standing as one of East Africas oldest continuously inhabited urban settlements. The area was and still is a key site that is influential to Mombasa’s trade, architectural and tourism sectors.

After visiting Old Town and strolling through various shops, merchants and hotspots, we took a beautiful sunset ride in a “Dhow” which is a particular style of sailing vessel native to the Indian Ocean region. Historically used for trade and mercantilism, Dhows are noted by their long-thin hulls, having one or two masts rigged traditionally with settee or lateen sails.
