Google just publicly said you do NOT need an llms.txt file for AI search visibility…
…but meanwhile Yoast, AIOSEO, and other SEO tools are already building support for it anyway.
That’s what makes this conversation so interesting.
I spent time digging through Google’s new AI search documentation, testing the plugins already implementing llms.txt, and trying to separate reality from hype.
My honest take:
→ Google is probably right TODAY
→ But AI crawlers and agents are absolutely changing how the web works
→ Machine-readable content may become more important over time
→ And most businesses still have no idea this shift is happening
This carousel breaks down:
- what Google actually said
- what llms.txt does
- why SEO plugins are adding it
- why markdown matters
- and where I think this is all heading
The bigger story isn’t llms.txt itself.
It’s that websites are slowly evolving for AI systems, not just human visitors.
Curious what you think:
Useful?
Hype?
Future standard?
Waste of time?
