Congratulations to Richard Hutton-Squire, the Agri Western Cape Santam Young Farmer of the Year 2026.

Farming apples and pears in the Elgin-Grabouw region, Richard represents the technical skill, discipline and long-term thinking required to build a strong agricultural future.

The Young Farmer of the Year competition continues to highlight the next generation of agricultural leadership - farmers who are not only producing food, but also building businesses, supporting rural economies and carrying the industry forward.

We wish Richard all the best as he represents the Western Cape on the national stage.

In agriculture, problems are often only seen once they become visible: a lesion on fruit, a disease outbreak in a field, a consignment under threat, or a crop that no longer performs as expected. But according to Dr Ida Wilson, the real story usually starts much earlier.

🌱 Youth Day 2026: Growing the Future of South African Agriculture 🇿🇦

The future of agriculture is not only found in innovation, technology, and sustainability—it is found in the curiosity, determination, and potential of our youth.

This Youth Day, we celebrate the next generation of farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and agricultural leaders who will shape the future of food production in South Africa.

Whether it's a child helping in the family vegetable garden, learning where food comes from, or dreaming of a career in agriculture, every journey starts with a single seed.

As an industry, we have a responsibility to inspire, educate, and create opportunities for young people to become part of agriculture's future.

Investing in youth today means investing in food security tomorrow.

What does it take to keep a major agri-processing business alive?

In this episode of the Lucentlands Podcast, Dewald Kirsten and Louise Brodie speak to André Kemp, Investment Manager at Norfund, about investment, agriculture and the story behind the future of Langeberg Foods.

The conversation looks at far more than a transaction.

It unpacks the role of working capital in fruit processing, the importance of export markets, the pressure of seasonal production, and why a factory like this matters so much to growers, workers and the wider Ashton community.

A sick plant is never just a sick plant.

In this clip from the Lucentlands Podcast, Dr Ida Wilson, Specialist Agricultural Scientist and international independent scientific consultant associated with Stellenbosch University, explains why plant health has a much bigger impact than many people realise.

When a citrus farm is protected from disease, it can help protect jobs, support families, keep children in school and contribute to the broader agricultural economy.

As Dr Wilson explains, saving a crop can sometimes mean helping to save a farming business — and the people who depend on it.

One infected seed source can create the same disease problem across many farms.

In this clip from the Lucentlands Podcast, Dr Ida Wilson, Specialist Agricultural Scientist and international independent scientific consultant associated with Stellenbosch University, explains how a bacterial disease infected seed at a central seed multiplication site.

Once that infected seed was distributed to farmers in different areas, the same disease appeared across multiple farms.

Tonight, the agricultural community celebrates the Agri Western Cape/Santam Young Farmer of the Year Awards — an important event that recognises the dedication, innovation and leadership of young farmers in the agricultural sector.

These young farmers play a vital role in shaping the future of agriculture through their hard work, resilience and commitment to their businesses, communities and the wider industry.

Lucentlands would like to wish all of this evening’s contestants the very best of luck.

We also recognise the outstanding achievement of 2025 winner, Francois Rossouw, who not only claimed the Western Cape title but went on to be crowned South Africa's National Young Farmer of the Year.
