BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: ANNIE POIRIER | OOPS SOCIAL
What if you could actually feel someone’s personality before deciding whether you wanted to date them?
That question is at the heart of what Annie Poirier is building with Oops Social.
Annie is the founder of Oops Social, a voice-first dating platform created to make online dating feel less like judging a catalogue of carefully curated photos and profiles, and more like actually getting to know another human being.
And I think what makes Annie’s story especially interesting is that she didn’t come from the tech world.
Her career has taken her through 12 years in outside sales, several years working in pipeline construction, building a digital marketing agency and creating a national beauty magazine.
Then she had an idea she believed in enough to teach herself what she needed to know to bring it to life.
Annie designed the Oops product experience and website and continues to lead the brand, marketing, social media, advertising and user growth herself.
The idea behind Oops started with something many people who have tried online dating can relate to: ghosting, endless swiping and trying to figure out who someone really is from a handful of photos and a polished bio.
Annie wondered what would happen if we heard someone before we judged them.
Could hearing their humour, confidence, awkwardness, energy and personality help us connect differently?
Oops is designed around exactly that.
Instead of relying primarily on written profiles, people reveal themselves through voice and interactive experiences like the Wheel of Oops, Confession Booth and Crush Booth.
Even that sometimes-awkward first conversation gets a shake-up. Before a chat opens, both people complete an Oops First Move — a playful voice challenge that immediately gives them something real to talk about.
Oops entered beta on June 29, 2026, and members have already generated nearly 200,000 listens on voice Moments.
That tells me Annie may be tapping into something people are hungry for: a different way to connect.
I’ve also had the opportunity to get to know Annie beyond the business, and I love meeting entrepreneurs who see a problem and decide to build something that challenges the way it has always been done.
Annie isn’t just building another dating platform.
She’s asking whether technology can help us put a little more humanity back into how we meet each other.
If you’re single, curious about what’s happening in Edmonton’s entrepreneurial community, or simply love seeing a local founder take a big idea and run with it, Annie Poirier is someone worth getting to know.
