Running a start-up means doing a bit of everything.

Founder. Salesperson. Customer service team. Finance department. IT support.

And, occasionally, receptionist.

But you don't have to answer every call yourself.

A virtual receptionist can answer your business calls, take messages, transfer enquiries and help make sure potential customers don't slip through the cracks – while you get on with running the business.

We've put together a guide to the benefits of using a virtual receptionist for start-ups and small businesses.

Plumbers, is your phone keeping up with your workload?

When you’re on-site, driving between jobs or dealing with an emergency, answering every call isn’t always possible.

But as your plumbing business grows, those unanswered calls can become more than an everyday frustration. They could point to a gap in how you manage new enquiries.

Our latest article takes a closer look at the challenge, including why relying on voicemail may not be enough and how better call coverage can help you protect opportunities without pulling you away from the job.

If the phone is becoming harder to keep up with, it might be time to look at what happens to your calls when you’re unavailable.

Meet the hardest-working member of the Answer4u team.

She doesn't sleep.
She doesn't eat lunch.
She doesn't drink tea.
She has never once been asked to chip in for Gary's birthday.

And somehow… she still manages to answer calls at 2:14am.

Our AI Receptionist handles straightforward enquiries, takes messages and keeps calls moving — whether it's 9:16am and everyone is calling at once, or the rest of the office has long since gone home.

She even knows when a question needs a human and makes sure it gets passed to the right person.

Basically, she's the colleague who never says:

"Sorry, I was just making a brew."

We've followed her through a typical day at Answer4u.

Our latest research, conducted with YouGov, asked UK adults whether they would prefer to speak to a human or AI when contacting a business.

The answer was striking:

90% prefer speaking to a real person.

That’s particularly interesting as AI receptionists, virtual agents and chatbots become increasingly common across customer service.

At Answer4u, we don’t see AI and people as competing solutions.

We believe the future of customer service is about getting the balance right: using AI and automation for straightforward enquiries, while keeping people available when customers need understanding, flexibility or empathy.

The best customer experience may not be human OR AI. It could be human AND AI.

Only 26% of UK consumers are willing to wait longer than one minute for a business to answer the phone.

At first glance, that statistic feels like a story about patience. But perhaps it's really a story about expectations.

Consumers today can order food, book appointments, compare prices, and contact businesses in seconds.

Convenience has become the norm.

Our recent YouGov research found that just 26% of consumers would wait longer than one minute for a business to answer their call.

The question for businesses isn't whether that's fair. The question is whether customer expectations have already moved on.

Customers rarely see what's happening behind the scenes. They don't see a busy team, a client meeting, a site visit, or a staff shortage.

They simply experience whether they were able to reach you when they needed to.

Perhaps that's the biggest lesson from this research.

Customer experience doesn't begin when the conversation starts.

It begins the moment someone decides to get in touch.

Thank you to everyone who has followed our consumer research series. If you'd like to explore all of the findings, we've shared the full report in the comments.

What do you think? Has customer patience changed, or have business expectations simply failed to keep up?

Is voicemail costing your business opportunities?

For years, voicemail has been seen as a reliable backup when calls go unanswered.

However, new YouGov research commissioned by Answer4u suggests customer behaviour has changed.

Just 6% of UK consumers say they would leave a voicemail when calling a business that doesn't answer.

Instead, many people are more likely to hang up, try another contact method, or simply move on to a competitor.

As Sally-Ann O'Neill, Head of Contact Centre Operations at Answer4u, explains:

"Customers generally prefer channels that provide immediate response or confirmation that their enquiry has been received."

Today's customers expect quick acknowledgement and clear communication. If they don't get it, they often won't wait around.

So, it's worth asking:

If customers aren't leaving messages, how many enquiries, leads, or sales could be slipping through the cracks without you knowing?

More than one in three UK consumers will give up on a business call within 60 seconds and contact a competitor instead.

Read that again.

Not after five minutes.

Not after sitting through endless hold music.

Within one minute.

We recently commissioned independent research with YouGov to understand how UK consumers respond when a business doesn't answer the phone.

The findings reveal just how small the window is to make a positive first impression:

- 37% would abandon a call within 60 seconds
- 24% would use another contact method instead
- 6% would leave a voicemail
- Just 26% would wait longer than one minute

For businesses that rely on inbound enquiries, that's a sobering reality.

Every unanswered call isn't just a missed conversation. It could be a missed sale, a lost lead, or a customer choosing a competitor who picked up the phone first.

Customer expectations have changed. People expect quick access, fast responses, and confidence that their enquiry is being handled.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more insights from the research and exploring what these findings mean for businesses across the UK.
