Data from Chartbeat shows that while overall traffic declined by 6% in 2025, search referrals dropped significantly: Google Search fell by 34%, and Discover by 16%.

The impact is even more severe for smaller publishers (1,000–10,000 daily page views), who saw a 60% drop in search traffic. Medium-sized sites (10k–100k daily views) experienced a 47% decline.

As John Saroff points out, direct audience relationships are now “essential survival tools.” To fill the gap, publishers are increasingly turning to internal traffic and “dark social” (such as messaging platforms like WhatsApp).
