We hear this question a lot from merchants who sense their website is falling behind but aren't sure if the answer is a redesign or a replatform.
A redesign is mostly cosmetic. Usually, it’s built on the same platform that's already running things and works well when the underlying system is fine, but the site just feels tired.
Replatforming means the system itself has hit a wall. This is where the hard work happens.
We usually see this show up in a handful of ways. Sometimes it's the catalog outgrowing what the platform can realistically handle. Other times integrations with ERP or fulfillment systems have turned into a pile of workarounds nobody wants to touch. B2B pricing rules and account structures might be pushing past what checkout was ever built to support, or the site's performance has hit a ceiling that no amount of custom development can move.
If none of that sounds like your situation, a redesign is probably enough on its own. Most merchants don't actually need to replatform. They need to get more out of the platform they're already on.
The mistake we run into most is treating this as a design decision when it's really an infrastructure one. Judging the situation by how the site looks skips over the harder question, which is whether what's underneath can actually grow with the business.
