Adversarial is the new black. Cybersecurity researcher Bill Swearingen is betting on it.

His project, noRecognition, creates computer-generated patterns that confuse AI-powered surveillance cameras and license plate readers. Put one of his patterns on a person or vehicle, and the system may look right at it and see nothing worth reporting.

To us, the patterns look like chaotic geometric art - or possibly a sweater designed during a power outage. To a surveillance system, they act like an invisibility cloak. Which is why this may be more than an interesting tech experiment. It could become de rigueur among privacy advocates, protesters, hackers, and the fashionably surveillance-averse.

The next big fashion statement may not be a logo, a color, or a celebrity collaboration. It may be adversarial camouflage that lets people walk past a street camera without becoming another entry in a database.

So yes, we’re also betting adversarial will be the new black. You’ll see it everywhere - even if the cameras don’t.

It’s always sad saying goodbye to our international clients when it’s time to return to the head office in their home country. Having a nice dinner helps ease the pain. 😉 We’re gonna miss you, Yasui-san!
