As the U.S. works to strengthen its maritime industrial base and compete on a global stage, one question stands out: how do we turn maritime ambition into real ex*****on?

During National Maritime Week, SHIPPINGInsight, in partnership with American Maritime Industrial Coalition, will host Revitalizing the U.S. Maritime Industry—a leadership forum bringing together voices from government, industry, and innovation.

The program features voices from across the sector, including Carleen Lyden Walker, Stephen Carmel, Todd Young (invited), James Watson, Andrew Farquharson (invited), Beatriz Canamary, Elspeth McMahon, Garrett Huffman, and David Walker. The program will explore workforce development, shipbuilding capacity, supply chain resilience, and the future of maritime technology.

As Carleen Lyden Walker shared, “National Maritime Week is the ideal time for all the stakeholders in this space to convene and map the future of our industry ‘stated Ms. Walker. “Our voices need to be unified, strategic, and strong if we hope to break the logjam and get our industry back to a global leadership position. This is about how our industry impacts national security, economic, energy, climate and workforce security. This is our moment to make a difference and take action.”

Speakers include:
Carleen Lyden Walker
Jonathan Chia
Darren Shelton
Mike Fossum
Beatriz Canamary

An overview of the Maritime Revitalization Agenda and the Maritime Action Plan will be led by Beatriz Canamary.

The 2025 National Security Strategy makes one thing unmistakably clear: America’s industrial and maritime base is now central to national security.

SHIPPINGInsight’s new industry-led response outlines what that means in practice—and what’s at stake if the U.S. fails to act. The report highlights persistent barriers holding back maritime growth, from fragmented governance and workforce shortages to innovation gaps and aging infrastructure.

It also lays out a path forward: a coordinated, industry-driven framework to align shipyards, ports, manufacturers, logistics providers, workforce institutions, and technology partners.

Federal policy can set the direction, but only industry can organize for ex*****on. The time to build a resilient, modern, and competitive maritime sector is now.

A new paper from Dr. Beatriz Canamary of SuRe Strategy Group—shaped by insights from the 2025 SHIPPINGInsight Leadership Roundtables and Congressional testimony—lays out a unified national roadmap for restoring U.S. maritime strength.

Her Convergence Framework highlights a rare alignment between policymakers and industry leaders and charts a clear path forward:
• Establish a Maritime Coordination Council
• Reinstitute a U.S. Maritime Service
• Accelerate innovation through regional centers
• Modernize U.S.-flag policy and expand distributed shipbuilding

This is the first comprehensive plan for U.S. maritime revitalization in more than 50 years—built on collaboration, innovation, and national readiness.

Revitalizing America’s Maritime Power

Following the 2025 SHIPPINGInsight Leadership Roundtable, Dr. Beatriz Canamary of SuRe Strategy Group has released a compelling white paper: Revitalizing America’s Maritime Power: A National Blueprint for Industrial Renewal, Security, and Competitiveness.

Drawing on insights from 49 industry leaders, the paper outlines key challenges and opportunities to rebuild U.S. maritime strength across ports, shipbuilding, workforce, and innovation. It highlights five systemic barriers holding back progress—fragmented governance, workforce shortages, underinvestment in innovation, misaligned incentives, and gaps in Jones Act and U.S.-flag compliance—and calls for coordinated, industry-wide action.

“The opportunity exists today—but policy continuity and a whole-of-industry approach will determine whether America achieves maritime leadership,” says Dr. Canamary.

The paper underscores how maritime revitalization touches every national priority, from supply chain stability and manufacturing revival to energy transition and defense readiness.
