A ceremony to kick off a memorial hockey tournament organized by friends of four Humboldt Broncos hockey players from St. Albert, Alberta who died in the tragic bus crash three months ago was held in St. Albert on July 6, 2018. The weekend tournament, running Friday through Sunday at the Mark Messier Arena in Servus Place, honoured four fallen Broncos who were St. Albert hockey alumni: Stephen Wack, Jaxon Joseph, Logan Hunter and Conner Lukan. A ceremonial puck was dropped by Humboldt Broncos survivors Derek Patter and Tyler Smith before the game.

More than fifteen years after Alberta’s ballooning class sizes became a flashpoint in an acrimonious teachers’ strike, tales of classes that start the year with more students than desks remain common.

Parents speak of children competing for teachers’ attention, while teachers in turn struggle to meet dozens of students’ complex needs.

All this is despite high-profile class-size targets on the books and at least $2.7 billion of taxpayers’ money provided since 2004 to hire teachers and meet those goals.

The path to businessman Mike Liber’s success in hiring people with mental disabilities started with his realization that your average teenager is woefully mediocre when it comes to cleaning restaurant tables. Liber, 54, runs two Dairy Queens in Sherwood Park. He employs 100 workers, about 40 of them are high school students.

We have a lot of rolling, flat land around the city with lots of little depressions that collect floodwater … and we have a fairly sizeable mosquito population that takes advantage of that.”
