Your Master Painters New Zealand Apprentice of the Year 2026 🏆

We're proud to announce that Matthew Sims has been named the Master Painters New Zealand Apprentice of the Year for 2026!

The award was presented over the weekend after a huge week of hard work transforming Ranui House in Christchurch.

This achievement reflects the hard work, commitment and attention to detail Matthew has shown throughout his apprenticeship.

It's also a proud moment for the whole Sims & Blue team, with Matthew becoming our second apprentice in four years to take out the title of New Zealand's top painting and decorating apprentice.

A big shout-out to our experienced tradespeople who have worked alongside Matthew - passing on their knowledge, setting high standards and helping train the next generation of our trade.

Congratulations - an outstanding achievement! 👏

We all know how great our Paul is but are so stoked on him being recognised with this lovely award. Proud much. 🧡

We have some exciting news to share! Paul Southworth won the Individual Category at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards!

Through his vision and leadership, Paul established Aroha Kaikorai Valley to create a healthier, more sustainable future for the Kaikorai Catchment. His passion for the environment has inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, from local businesses and schools to backyard trappers, volunteers, and community clean-up crews.

Under Paul's guidance, AKV has helped restore native biodiversity through predator control, native planting, habitat restoration, and waterway protection. Thanks to these efforts, native birdlife is returning and the ecological health of the valley continues to improve.

More than anything, Paul has built a movement. He brings people together, motivates them to take action, and shows us that every contribution matters. His dedication, energy, and belief in the community are helping create a greener, healthier Kaikorai Valley for future generations.

👏 Thank you, Paul, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Once upon a time, in the not too distant past, there was no AKV and no AKV shed! AKV’s noticeboard may feel like it’s always been there, but it was in fact ProSigns who gave us the signs that proudly stand on our shed today. They’ve also produced our signs for reserves and traps, and continue to give us their support. Thank you ProSigns for your generous contributions to the project.

ProSigns specialise in vehicle wraps, building signs, displays signs, corflute and aluminium composite material (ACM) signs. If you need large scale digital printing, window decals for your building, or 3D signage, give them a call.

We’re looking for a web developer to join us at Turboweb.

We’re pretty open on what this role looks like. Part-time, contract, flexible hours, or potentially full-time for the right person. We’re mainly looking for someone experienced, good to work with, and keen to build solid things.

Ideally you’ll have 5+ years of commercial experience and feel comfortable working across modern web applications and systems.

The work is a mix of client projects, platform development, and improving products we’re building ourselves, so there’s always a bit of variety.

We’re a small team and keep things pretty down to earth. We like working with people who communicate well, think practically, and enjoy what they do. We’re also fairly committed to bakery runs for pies and snacks, and birthdays always involve cake.

If it sounds like something you’d be interested in, send us a message.

We build practical, well-thought-out solutions for organisations across Aotearoa, including not-for-profits and community-focused work. It’s important to us that what we do has a positive impact.
If you (or someone you know) has 5+ years of commercial development experience and likes working on real-world problems with a good crew, check out the details here

Bit of a bumpy patch earlier today, one of the upstream hardware nodes we rely on had an issue which caused some temporary disruption.

Good news is it’s all been sorted, and everything is back up and running.

We’ll keep a close eye on things, but if anything doesn’t look quite right on your end, just let us know

Happy Friday!

Earlier today, our upstream infrastructure provider experienced a hardware issue affecting one of their nodes, which caused temporary disruption to some hosted services. The issue was identified as a faulty hardware component, and their engineering team worked to replace it as quickly as possible.

The Friday Catch-Up

We often forget to post here, mainly because we like to be working with the humans as much as possible but here’s a quick Friday round-up of what’s been happening.

We’ve sponsored Paul’s sister Di, who has just started her mission to ride the length of the country. Huge effort and she’s only just clipped in. We’ve popped a map up so you can see the plan - it’s no small adventure. On top of that, if you didn't know, she’s also franchised Aroha Kaikorai Valley and is now officially Aroha Cambridge. You can check that out at www.arohacambridge.co.nz.

We also sponsored Sarah’s son for his basketball tour to the Gold Coast, and he is properly pumped about it.

The Turboweb team has hit the ground running this year. There’s been plenty of new work to get stuck and hate to say it's shocking that it's almost March already!

And in equally important company news, Bruce is growing up (almost 6 months old) He’s now featured on our website, so if you’re that way inclined, you can follow his career journey there.

Right. That’s us for the week. Back to the real world. Have a great weekend.
