Somewhere out there, an agency is asking a client to fill out a generic discovery questionnaire to glean brand insights. We are begging them to stop.

The good stuff doesn’t surface from generic questions like “if your brand was an animal, what would it be?” It lives in the things you’d never put in a brief.

The most dramatic rebrand we’ve ever done involved changing almost nothing.

Same logo, same colors, same SMC. They had such a great story...it’s just that nobody was telling it.

So after enough campus visits, focus groups, and stakeholder interviews to genuinely concern our families, we were able to create a sharp brand position, a complete messaging system, and expanded their logo into a full identity system so intentional, it looks like a whole new brand.

SMC is growing during a time when small colleges across the country are struggling to prove their value, some even quietly closing. They just couldn’t prove it with their brand...now they can. And it’s working: applications are up, enrollment is up, and engagement is up.

So while we may ask more questions than a five year old, we promise it’s worth it.

The Spartanburg Academic Movement needed a college-access brand that teenagers would actually engage with. So we talked to the students across all seven school districts first. The name, the voice…the whole identity came from what students told us, not what a conference room assumed.

Big Mo is short for Momentum. Or Movement. Or Money....whatever resonates with individual students facing barriers to college.

With 1,000+ student signups in the first three months, and a Silver ADDY Award for Brand Identity, Big Mo is shaping up to be a big hit.

After 12 months of planning, design revisions, appeals, and approximately 940 emails, sign is finally up! No matter how many times you do this, signage is always the thing that takes twice a long as you think it should ... and tests everyone’s will to live.

But when it works, it works. And in this case, totally worth the wait.

Just a reminder that not all rebrands are visual. Sometimes all the work is actually underneath.

Bija Bennett didn’t come to us for a new look, she came to us because her work had outgrown the old frame around it. Over the last six months, we’ve helped her step back, name what she’s really doing in the world now, and built a strategy that supports the next chapter for BijaB...not just “more content.”

This is what brand strategy looks like when it’s done right: clarity, alignment, and a plan that actually respects the human(s) on the other side.

Which seems to be a radical concept in our industry.
