Here’s what I do like about Substack.
It gives you a place to keep talking to your readers.

Your book is an important piece of your thought leadership. It captures your ideas, your experiences, your expertise, and your message in one place.
But a book is not the end of the conversation.
Sometimes it’s the beginning.

Substack gives you a place to continue sharing what you know—without having to write another entire book every time you have something to say.

That’s the beauty of continuing the conversation.
You don’t have to know exactly where every idea is going when you begin.
You just have to be willing to explore it.

Of course, Substack isn't for everyone. If the thought of adding another platform to your already-full life makes you want to hide under your desk, I get it. 😂

The goal isn't to be everywhere.
The goal is to be 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮.
So, should you be on Substack?

Sometimes a phrase lands in my mind and instantly becomes a picture.

This one feels both simple and powerful:

𝐁𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲.
𝐁𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠.

Not who others expect you to be.
Not who the world tells you to be.

𝐀𝐒𝐊 𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐘
𝐐: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤?
A: Longer than most people expect...and that's actually a good thing.
One of the first questions I hear from prospective authors is, "How quickly can we get my book published?"

My answer is always the same:
𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.
Writing the manuscript is only one piece of the journey.

A professionally published book also includes editing, proofreading, interior design, cover design, revisions, production, printing, distribution, and a launch strategy. Each step builds on the one before it—and each deserves the time to be done well.

Could you rush it? Of course.
But remember...
You only get one chance to make a first impression.
Your book will represent you long after you've handed out your business card, finished your keynote, or wrapped up your networking conversation. That's why I encourage authors to focus on 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝.

A well-published book isn't late.

August always reminds me of the first day of school, so this month’s four weekly blogs will all highlight a “first!”

Have you ever played an old-fashioned pinball machine?

Sometimes I think life works the same way.
We're launched into the world, and for a while, we bounce around—trying new things, hitting obstacles, changing directions, and slowly discovering where we truly belong.

One of my earliest "pings" came from... the Girl Scouts.
My mom signed me up hoping I'd enjoy camping and outdoor adventures.

The problem?
Even as a little girl, I was an 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹.
I preferred art projects, drawing, reading, and playing school with my friends. Bugs, cold weather, and sleeping outdoors were definitely not my thing!

After one particularly rainy camping trip (complete with asthma, allergies, and a midnight rescue by my parents), our troop leader gently suggested I might be happier pursuing a different activity.

At the time, it felt like I just wasn't a good fit.
Looking back, I see it very differently.
Every "not a good fit" helped point me toward what was.
Not a good fit...
Lifeguard.
Not a good fit...
High school theatre.
A possible fit...
Graphic designer.
A better fit...
Creative team leader.
The right fit...
Helping authors publish books that share their stories and leave a lasting legacy.

I've learned to appreciate life's "pings."
They aren't failures.
They're redirections.

Sometimes the closed door is simply pointing us toward the one we're meant to open.

This one reminds me that confidence isn't always about certainty.
Sometimes it's about trust.
Do what you must.
Trust what you do.

There are seasons in life when the path ahead feels clear. And there are seasons when we're simply taking the next step without knowing exactly where it will lead.

That's where trust becomes so important.
Trust your values.
Trust your experience.
Trust the lessons you've learned along the way.

Not because you'll always get everything right, but because growth rarely comes from standing still.

I've seen this with authors, entrepreneurs, and dreamers alike.
The people who make the greatest progress aren't the ones who have every answer before they begin. They're the ones who move forward despite uncertainty, trusting that each step will reveal the next.

Sometimes courage looks less like confidence and more like commitment.
A commitment to keep showing up.
To keep learning.
To keep moving forward.

Do what you must.
Then trust yourself enough to believe you're capable of more than you know.

A: It depends—but perhaps a better question is...

I've seen books published for a few hundred dollars and others that cost tens of thousands. The difference isn't simply the number of pages or the quality of the cover.

It's the purpose behind the book.
Are you writing a family legacy book?
A lead-generating business book?
A children's book? A memoir?
An anthology?

Each has different goals—and different investment levels.
I often remind prospective authors that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞.

Why?
Because if you cut corners on editing, design, or strategy, you may end up paying to fix mistakes later—or worse, publishing a book that never accomplishes what you hoped it would.
Instead of asking, "What's the cheapest way to publish?"

• What level of support do I need?
• How involved do I want to be?
• What return do I want this book to generate?

August always reminds me of the first day of school, so this month’s four weekly blogs will all highlight a “first!”

Have you ever looked back and realized your career was quietly preparing you for something you couldn't yet see?

I certainly have.
Fresh out of college, I worked as a window display artist, then as a graphic designer for a printing company, and eventually managed a creative team at one of the world's largest financial institutions.

Every day, my team designed and produced proposals for high-net-worth investors.
Looking back, we were creating books.

I just didn't know those experiences were preparing me for my life's work.
Then came 9/11.
Like many businesses, our company reorganized. Two years later, my department was eliminated.

As I packed up my office, one thing caught my attention—a piece of three-dimensional artwork hanging just outside my door.
It was a reconstructed book.
I remember thinking, "I should try that someday."

At the time, it seemed like a random thought during a difficult season.
It wasn't.

A couple of years later, I was asked to design my very first book cover.
Then my first complete book.

Today, more than two decades later, I've had the privilege of helping nearly 2,000 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 publish books that share their stories, grow their businesses, preserve their legacies, and change lives.

Looking back, I don't believe any of those earlier experiences were accidents.
Each one was a breadcrumb leading me toward the work I was meant to do.

That's why I've learned not to dismiss the seemingly ordinary moments in life.
Sometimes purpose doesn't arrive with a grand announcement.
Sometimes it quietly leaves breadcrumbs for us to follow.

When we get real, we also begin to bring out our BRAVE.

Sometimes a phrase lands in my mind and instantly becomes a picture. I literally write the phrase in my phone Notes and later create a graphic image of what appeared in my head.

I call this little creative series my 𝑼𝑷𝑺𝑰 𝑫𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔, from my book of the same name.
This one reminds me that ideas alone don’t change the world.
Vision matters.
Purpose matters.
But progress happens when 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

In publishing, I see this every day.
Many people dream of writing a book someday. But the authors who actually change lives are the ones who decide to move forward — to write the chapter, share the story, and take ownership of their message.
