Hunza Has Given Its Verdict — What Comes Next?
The people of Hunza have spoken. By electing Naiknam Karim as their representative in the GBLA-6 election, voters have placed their trust in a leader they believe can represent their aspirations and address the challenges facing the region. But elections are only the beginning of a much longer journey.
A question now echoes across the valleys of Hunza: Can Naiknam Karim become the leader Hunza has been searching for over the decades? Can he fulfill the commitments he made during the campaign? More importantly, can he guide Hunza toward sustainable development, responsible governance, and long-term progress? OR, Will he become the " OLD WINE IN A NEW BOTTLE". The answers will not come from speeches or promises alone. They will be reflected in actions, decisions, and the ability to deliver meaningful results for the people who entrusted him with their vote.
At the same time, history reminds us that leadership is only one side of a healthy democratic system. Hunza does not only need a strong representative; it also needs a strong and active opposition. In the past, opposition voices often faded away once elections were over, leaving little room for accountability and constructive criticism. This time, the responsibility does not rest solely on the shoulders of the elected representative. It is equally a responsibility for leaders such as Imtiaz Ul Haq, Nazeem Ul Amin, and Asif Sakhi. Thousands of voters placed their confidence in them as well, and those voters deserve continued representation, engagement, and advocacy. True development and progress emerge when the elected representatives are held accountable, policies are questioned , and alternative ideas are brought to the table. A strong opposition is not an obstacle to development; it is one of its essential foundations.
The people of Hunza have completed their role by casting their votes. Now the responsibility shifts to both the elected representative and the opposition.The coming years will determine whether these leaders can rise above political competition and work for the collective future of Hunza.
Time will tell who emerges as a true leader, but one thing is certain, the future of Hunza depends not only on those who won the election, but also on those who continue to serve the people after the election is over.
